I fully support activites for students, but I don't think that Meeteetse can be going on trips that include overnight stays for the basketball teams at the same time they are crying poverty. How are others supposed to take seriously the protests of the school about funding when we spend money on this? I don't care how much (or how little) is actually spent, the perception is bad.
ReplyDeleteEven though the perception may be bad in some constituent's point of view, the district still has to do what is BEST for KIDS. This overnight trip provides the safest and most economical means for transporting our students to compete with CONFERENCE opponents that are at a distance. Conference opponents are mandated contest by the Wyoming High School Activity Association (WHSAA). If we fail to play these opponents (no matter how far the WHSAA has determined them to be), it would negate our playing basketball at a competitive level for our students in the state of Wyoming.
ReplyDeleteI don't like our kids traveling on these roads any more than the next guy (especially during Wyoming's winters). I have lost one child to Wyoming's winter highways, and as Superintendent, I want to be as prudent as possible in getting kids to contest and home. If this results in overnight stays (even if it required outside fund-raising) then that is what we will do.
The poverty our district has cried about is a result of low enrollment and a funding model that doesn't support the smallest school districts adequately.
I challenge constituents to take a look around the state and see if there is another district that spends money as prudently as our district. Sure there are areas where our district spends additional money outside the academic realm to maintain the climate and educational environment, but these things are important too. We just want our students to have the same education as other students in the state.
Our school district needs the support of our constituency. All must advocate for what is BEST for our students, not what is cheapest or supports palatable perceptions. After all, Meeteetse students will be forced to compete with other students from around the state, nation and world when they graduate. Our youth are the foundation of Meeteetse's future. If we want them to come back, then they must know their children will be provided an equitable public education. If Meeteetse can not do this, then how can parents look at themselves in the mirror and say they are doing what is best for their children's future by having them attend this school.
Thank you Pete Cobb for lighting a fire. I appreciate your honesty and concern. Our school obviously needs to address perceptions with explanations in order to gain more support. Thanks again for taking interest in our school.
